Whispering Roads Trail
A Wellington to Napier Scandinavian Trail.
44pp, prepared by Dr. Kay Flavell for Friends of Mauriceville Inc.

The aim of the Trail is "to help you imagine the experiences and retrace the footsteps of Scandinavian pioneer families from Denmark, Norway and Sweden who started their new life in New Zealand in the 1870s at either end of the 70 Mile Bush. This mighty forest stretched from north of Opaki, just north of Masterton, to the edge of the Takapau Plains."

It focuses on the first thirty years, and traces Scandinavian contributions to the development of railways, roads and bridges in the 1870s and sawmills in the 1880s, ending with the rise of cooperative dairy farming in the 1890s. Richly illustrated with historic photographs from national and family collections. A heartbreaking and heartwarming story that will interest people of all ages. Follow the trail through this fascinating chapter of New Zealand's early history.
